Banks Expand Services to Capture More Customer Relationships - banks expand
Stifel Bank’s effort to revive venture banking follows the abrupt failure of Silicon Valley Bank, which left many tech-focused lenders without a clear partner.

Banks are expanding their role in customers’ financial lives, moving past basic product offers and simple digital screens. The new approach seeks to increase control, deepen expertise, and capture more ownership across a range of services that go beyond traditional checking or savings accounts.

The shift shows up in several distinct banking models. Live Oak Bank concentrates on niche small-business sectors, while Stifel Bank is re-launching venture-banking activities after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. SoFi has placed a bank-issued stablecoin into a card program valued at $25 billion, and newcomer Nubank is exploring a purchase of Monzo as it broadens its footprint in the United States.

Live Oak Bank was founded in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2008, a time marked by the global financial crisis. Its original purpose was narrowly defined: to provide loans specifically to veterinarians.

That narrow focus soon broadened. The institution now serves clients nationwide in roughly forty industry verticals and has become the largest SBA 7(a) lender by dollar volume, all while operating without any physical branch network.

The company describes itself as a digitally focused small-business bank. Its core method, however, relies on deep knowledge of each client’s industry rather than on pure digital distribution, allowing it to tailor financing solutions that match sector-specific needs.

Stifel Bank’s effort to revive venture banking follows the abrupt failure of Silicon Valley Bank, which left many tech-focused lenders without a clear partner. By re-entering this space, Stifel aims to provide capital and banking services to early-stage companies that require both financial backing and industry insight.

SoFi is putting a bank-issued stablecoin underneath a $25 billion card program without asking customers to change how they pay.

Nubank is considering a potential acquisition of Monzo even as it builds out its own U.S. banking footprint.

Overall, the industry is seeing a blend of digital innovation and sector-specific expertise. Banks that combine technology with deep knowledge of particular markets appear better positioned to capture larger shares of the financial relationship with their customers.
