Generali GC&C Leads Global Insurance Transformation

Generali Global Corporate & Commercial (GC&C) is leading the insurance industry through a significant transformation as commercial and corporate insurance becomes increasingly complex and digital-first.

Cloud-first strategy and a unified global platform

GC&C, a specialized division of Generali Group, offers P&C insurance and services to medium and large companies in over 180 countries. The unit was created a decade ago to serve as a single, standardised global division, aiming to deliver a consistent experience regardless of the client’s location. The strategy has moved away from traditional, disconnected databases toward a cloud-first, low-code/no-code model enhanced by AI solutions.

This modernization effort addressed a major inefficiency where underwriters had to retype information multiple times across different systems. GC&C worked with Microsoft to develop Power Apps, creating an end-to-end solution called Agora. This platform consolidated 16,000 data points from eight separate systems into one global system, allowing underwriters to access all necessary information in a single interface rather than handling multiple workbenches. According to Global Head of Operations & IT Matthew Richardson, the shift is designed to be resilient and scalable. The new architecture eliminates the need for repetitive data entry and provides 24/7 uptime. By standardising processes across 27 countries, the company has moved closer to a “one and done” workflow where data is entered once and flows to where it is needed.

Collaborating with partners for efficiency

Building a resilient IT ecosystem requires close coordination with technology partners. GC&C has established a center of excellence in the UK to manage IT security and infrastructure, leveraging Microsoft Azure for cloud management. This partnership helps mitigate the risks associated with a cloud-first approach, a critical factor in a highly regulated industry.

The business is also integrating AI tools to streamline operations. A collaboration with Sixfold, an AI-powered underwriting platform, has resulted in a 95% success rate for risk assessment automation. By embedding such solutions into the business, GC&C aims to reduce administrative burdens and allow employees to focus on high-value tasks.

Richardson notes that while AI offers significant efficiency gains, the corporate insurance sector remains a people business. “The real shift is as much about mindset and culture as it is about technology,” he says. He warns against “death by proof of concept,” where numerous AI projects fail to scale because they lack integration into daily workflows. The company is now developing eight internal AI models for the policy lifecycle, focusing on enhancing rather than replacing the underwriting role.

The importance of data quality

GC&C is currently launching a large-scale initiative called Data 3.0 to ensure that only high-quality data enters its systems. The company has recognized that AI solutions are only as effective as the information they process. Richardson emphasizes that a fully educated and engaged workforce is essential to maximize the value of these technologies.

With a 75% positive feedback rate achieved six months after launching its modernization programme, GC&C is focusing on adoption and change management. The goal is to make solutions intuitive enough that the business stops raising tickets, freeing up IT resources for further innovation. This approach highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing technological advancement with the human element of insurance.
