OP and Qutwo launch quantum computing alliance

Helsinki will soon host a new research unit that combines quantum computing and artificial intelligence for the financial sector. The partnership between OP Pohjola, one of the Nordic region’s largest banks, and Finnish fintech startup Qutwo Oy will develop tools to change how banks and insurers handle risk, investments, and fraud detection.
The joint venture is building a team of 60 specialists from regional and international talent. Timo Ritakallio, CEO of OP Pohjola, said the collaboration could strengthen the bank’s role in financial services innovation. “Our partnership with Qutwo is a game changer and has the potential to strengthen Pohjola’s competitive position as a financial services pioneer.”
It marks a shift in how Nordic institutions approach emerging technology.
Quantum computing meets banking
The unit’s main task is to build quantum-ready AI systems for finance. Peter Sarlin, founder and CEO of Qutwo, said the technology is already a competitive advantage. “Quantum computing and AI are no longer in the distant future. They provide a strategic competitive edge that is being built now,” he said.
Sarlin’s earlier company, Silo AI, was acquired in July by Advanced Micro Devices for $665 million. The deal established him as a major figure in Europe’s AI sector. He now views the OP Pohjola partnership as a way for the continent to keep its technological independence. “This is precisely the kind of approach that Europe can take to build sustainable technological leadership and sovereignty,” said Sarlin.

The research unit will run on Qutwo OS, a platform designed to merge AI and quantum computing. Quantum computers process information differently from traditional machines, allowing them to solve complex problems like portfolio optimization or real-time fraud detection much faster.
Banks face growing pressure to reduce costs while improving security and service. Quantum computing, combined with AI, may offer a solution. If the Helsinki unit succeeds, it could become a model for other institutions adopting the technology before it becomes standard.
Financial sector interest in quantum technology
Ritakallio pointed to three areas where quantum computing could make a difference: risk management, investment strategies, and fraud prevention. Traditional computers struggle with the large number of variables in these tasks, but quantum systems could analyze huge datasets quickly, spotting patterns and anomalies that might otherwise be missed.
The effort comes as Europe seeks to reduce dependence on U.S. and Asian tech companies. By investing in local quantum and AI development, the region hopes to stay competitive in a field that could shape the future of finance. While the outcome is uncertain, the OP Pohjola-Qutwo venture is one of the clearest steps yet toward applying quantum computing in real-world settings.
Sarlin’s experience in scaling AI ventures adds weight to the project. His previous success with high-risk, high-reward roles suggests the team understands the challenges ahead.
