Temenos ramps up AI in banking services

Swiss banking software provider Temenos is shifting its focus from infrastructure to intelligence, positioning itself as a key player in the financial sector’s push toward AI-driven modernization.

From core systems to smart workflows

For over 30 years, Temenos has built banking software used by more than 950 institutions worldwide. Now, the company is embedding AI directly into its platform, targeting efficiency, compliance, and customer personalization.

Its strategy centers on AI that is explainable and embedded into core banking, digital channels, and financial crime mitigation. Recent updates include AI agents, copilots, and a conversational studio, all designed to automate workflows without disrupting existing systems. The tools leverage Microsoft Azure AI and NVIDIA microservices to ensure security and transparency.

“Banks don’t need AI bolted onto critical systems,” said Barb Morgan, Temenos’ Chief Product and Technology Officer. “They need intelligence built into the products and workflows they already trust.”

Temenos has also expanded into wealth management, acquiring additiv in June to strengthen its AI-driven orchestration capabilities. The move reflects growing demand for hybrid wealth models, particularly in markets where scalability and regulatory compliance are priorities.

Takis Spiliopoulos, Temenos’ CEO, called the acquisition a way to “create strong differentiation at the banking experience layer.” The deal aligns with the company’s broader push to make AI a seamless part of banking operations.

Proving AI’s value in regulated environments

The challenge for Temenos isn’t convincing banks that AI matters—it’s demonstrating that its tools can deliver measurable results in highly regulated, complex environments. The company’s approach emphasizes embedded intelligence, explainability, and operational utility, aiming to balance innovation with reliability.

With more than 950 banks already using its platform, the company has a built-in audience for its AI features.

Recent product announcements suggest Temenos is betting on gradual integration. Its AI agents for financial crime mitigation, for example, are designed to work within existing compliance frameworks, not replace them. That cautious approach may appeal to banks wary of overhauling systems overnight.

Banks are under pressure to cut costs, speed up product delivery, and personalize services—all while meeting stricter regulatory demands. Temenos’ pitch is that its platform can address these demands at once.

Whether that promise holds will depend on real-world adoption. For now, the company remains one of the most visible names in AI-enabled banking software, with a strategy that prioritizes integration.
