Nubank launched its U.S. operations, providing customers with high-yield savings, a credit card without fees, and affordable international transfers via its partner, Lead Bank. At a Miami event, CEO David Vélez and co-founder Cristina Junqueira detailed the initial offerings, marking the company’s expansion into the American market.

The lineup consists of deposit accounts paying 3.50% annual yield, fee-free international remittances, and a no-annual-fee credit card that offers 1.5% cash back on purchases. Nubank’s application for a national bank charter received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in January.

They are now undergoing review by the Federal Reserve and the FDIC. Junqueira expects Nubank to be fully operational under its own charter sometime next year. Until then, the company will run its U.S. business through its partner-bank arrangement, a common structure among fintechs entering the American market.

Nubank’s success in Brazil can be attributed to its timing and temperament. When founded in 2013, a handful of large incumbent banks controlled the majority of Brazil’s banking market, known for high fees and poor service. Nubank started small, introducing a purple credit card that didn’t require a banking license.

The company eliminated fees Brazilians resented most, such as account maintenance and overdraft fees. By going fully digital and branch-free, Nubank passed savings back to customers and reached people traditional banks had largely written off. Nubank also rebuilt underwriting from scratch, using alternative data to assess risk and bringing 5.7 million previously excluded people into the credit-card market.

Nubank now serves over 60% of Brazil’s adult population and has become the country’s most valuable financial brand, without ever operating a physical branch network. The company’s approach has compounded over time, and it is now looking to replicate its success in the United States.

Nubank’s expansion into the U.S. market is significant, as it brings a new level of consumer experience to the country’s banking customers. The company’s focus on eliminating fees and using alternative data to assess risk has the potential to disrupt the traditional banking industry. As Nubank continues to grow and expand its services, it will have an impact on the U.S. banking system.
