Gamers shift to seamless digital payments

Gamers frequently abandon purchases due to payment problems rather than dissatisfaction with the games. A recent survey of 5,000 players across eight countries found nearly two-thirds left a transaction unfinished because of checkout issues. The industry is now adjusting how it processes payments to address these concerns.
Checkout friction leads to lost revenue
A survey by global payments provider Paysafe showed 64% of gamers have abandoned a purchase mid-transaction. Slow processing, confusing interfaces, and security doubts contribute to these failures. For an industry reliant on microtransactions and subscriptions, each incomplete payment represents significant financial losses.
Spending habits in gaming extend beyond single purchases. Players invest in mobile games (53%), full digital titles (43%), and subscriptions (39%). Despite this variety, payment methods remain fragmented. Debit cards (41%) and digital wallets (35%) are common, but no single option provides a smooth experience, leaving many transactions unfinished.
Security concerns deter purchases
Fraud protection is the primary payment concern for 36% of gamers. Another 65% admit security worries sometimes prevent them from completing a purchase. These hesitations result in lost sales. The survey indicates that if checkouts were faster and more secure, 46% of players would spend more on gaming.
Frictionless payments also enhance enjoyment. Two-thirds of gamers say seamless transactions improve their experience. When payments feel cumbersome, engagement suffers. For publishers and platforms, this directly impacts player loyalty.

Bob Legters, Chief Product Officer at Paysafe, stated, “Gaming has evolved into a continuous spending experience with subscriptions, digital content, and creator ecosystems. Payments now shape the overall player experience more than ever.”
The data suggests a unified digital wallet could solve many of these issues. An overwhelming 84% of gamers expressed interest in an all-in-one wallet for gaming and entertainment. Such a tool would simplify payments, reduce fraud risks, and streamline checkouts, addressing the biggest pain points in one solution.
This integration isn’t just about player satisfaction—it’s about capturing more spending. As gaming expands into cloud gaming, in-game marketplaces, and creator economies, the payment experience will decide who succeeds. Companies that improve checkout processes won’t just increase conversions; they’ll build stronger relationships with players who no longer view payments as an obstacle.
The survey highlights more than current habits—it outlines the future of an industry where gaming and entertainment increasingly overlap. If payments adapt, the financial potential is substantial. If they don’t, players will continue abandoning transactions.
