Gender refers to socially constructed characteristics of men and women – similar to norms, roles and relations of and between groups of women and men. Gender norms, roles and relations vary from society to society and evolve over time. They are often upheld and reproduced in the values, laws, education techniques, faith, media and other establishments of the society during which they exist.
